Introduction to Political Theory

To understand politics, understand the theories that govern it!

Political theory is the study of how people ought to organize the forces that shape their lives. Among the most immediate and controversial of these forces is government. Hence, we should know what government means, why we should have one, how it should be organized and when does it become illegitimate. Therefore, this course will consider the whats, whys, and hows of the economy, culture, ecology, race, gender, among others, that form the social and political experience. This is done through studying texts that have arisen during the past, shaping history. In reading the theories, we will consider the context and time in history from which they have arisen while also generating new contexts for subsequent scholars. The theorists include such classical and modern theorists as Plato, Aristotle, Hobbes, Lock, duBois, among others.

Objective: To understand the most well-known theories of politics which are the basis of political systems which govern and shape present day politics.

Learning outcome: Students would understand the basis of governments, their early philosophy and how the different theories examine different political aspects.
