Overview :
Recognizing the key role economic development and trade relations play in international affairs stands at the basis of any successful diplomatic activity to represent and promote the interests of a State. This course provides an overview of the workings of the modern economic system and delves into the structural mismatch between a globalized economy and a sovereign State system. This unstable and complex web of conflicting rules and principles asks interdisciplinary skills from the modern diplomat. The course examines the use and impact of sanctions and embargos and offers a set of tools that supports the diplomat in economic reporting. The role, function and workings of the main international economic and trade institutions, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organization, are the subject of evaluation and analysis. Furthermore, the increasing regional economic integration of States into economic blocs and the consequences for development and political power are evaluated. Finally, the course will address the practical skills the diplomat needs to master in order to prepare and execute negotiations that will lead to successful trade deals and increased direct foreign investment.
