• Understand the role of the diplomat in international relations and distinguish between the numerous diplomatic positions and how they work together in diplomatic missions.
• Recognize the importance of diplomatic communication and know how to set up dialogues and respectfully interact with international partners.
• Manage international diplomatic visits and events and know how to implement the appropriate flag protocol, seating arrangements and event schedule.

Overview:
A comprehension of the rules that govern diplomatic interaction is essential for a modern diplomat to be able to function in his or her international working environment. Diplomatic protocol provides a set of rules and guidelines on how diplomatic actors communicate and cooperate. It provides a framework in which formal, respectful behavior encourages fruitful negotiations and an outcome that benefits all actors. The course provides the student with an insight into the proper diplomatic behavior and prepares him or her for a professional career in a diplomatic environment. The organization of embassies, consulates and high commissions is also an important topic in the course. The student will learn the roles that people play in the various diplomatic missions and the precedence of the numerous diplomatic actors. Furthermore, he or she will learn the way in which diplomatic communication is organized. Finally, the course will provide an insight into the setup and organization of international diplomatic events. The proper reception of dignitaries is an essential part of the job of the diplomat and this course teaches him or her how to receive international guests with honor.
